The Evergreen Embroidered Granny Square

Hello again!

This little granny square has been causing quite a stir across the internet. I first designed it as part of the Winter Walk blanket back in 2023. I really knew it would be a winner when I added the embroidered squares to the outer border of that blanket.

I immediately fell in love with the combination of evergreen embroidery interspersed with multi coloured granny squares. If I loved them, I was pretty sure everyone would!

This year these little squares made another appearance. This time in the Festive Memories blanket.

But the popularity of something in the creative world, be it crochet, embroidery, knitting, whatever comes with a downside these days, sadly.

The rapid emergence of AI has given rise to very many unscrupulous (and shady) individuals who are capitalising on the talent and popularity of true designers. They can very easily replicate designs and pretend they are patterns, when behind the saccharin sweet pretty AI pictures there is nothing remotely resembling a pattern.

I’m sure you, dear reader are well aware of the AI slop which is flooding platforms like Etsy, and you may well have been caught out.

Recently, I’ve been finding several fake shops that have taken this embroidered square of mine and are selling pretend versions of it. Which is very annoying.

(I’ve outed a few in my latest Instagram and Facebook posts).

But hang on, let’s stop the gloom and take a positive from it.

Through this detective work I’ve been doing, I’ve discovered there is a demand for my little embroidered square as a stand-alone pattern, not just as part of a bigger blanket.

And I think it’s down to me to provide that pattern, not the fakers.

So, I’ve written out a crochet pattern for one square, something I’ve never done before!

The idea is that you can learn how to make the square and then run with it. Make it into anything you like.

How about using cotton yarn and making a set of Christmas coasters?

Or use the squares as the focal point of a table runner?

A cushion or pillow?

Or even incorporate them with other granny squares in an afghan or blanket?

Coming up is my mini pattern for the Evergreen Embroidered Granny Square – FREE to you lovely supportive people.

All I ask is that if you make something nice and Christmassy with the squares, please do share it on your Instagram or Facebook posts. And tag me @woolthreadpaint so that I can see your makes and don’t miss them! I’m excited to see what appears!

Together we can crush these AI slop fakers, crooks, criminals, plagiarists whatever you care to call them. Simply by not buying their tat!!

Here it is –

I’m also listing it in my Etsy shop for a nominal price.

Have fun,
