Hello again – this is a long one!
Back in 2023 I was asked by a number of people to design a blanket pattern using shades of blue. It was obvious that there was a blue gap in my blanket colours that needed to be filled.
The thing is, blue is a favourite colour of mine especially in the clothes I wear, but it was not a colour I had used very much in crochet.
I really don’t know why to be honest, although it might be something to do with the fact that blue is not a colour scheme I have in my own home.
Anyway, I was more than happy to produce a blue blanket, especially as I had a lot of different blue yarns in my stash which had hardly been used.

A blanket in tones of just one colour can tend to be quite boring. I think it helps to have a pop of a contrasting colour to bring it to life and I decided to add some shades of pink, from the palest pastel to a deeper rose pink, as you can see in the picture above.
True blue lovers loved the blanket, but I got some feedback from other people that perhaps the colours were just too blue!
That deep inky blueness proved difficult for some – too strong to blend in with their home decor. To be honest, this was the case for me. My Moody Blues blanket lies on the shelf in my studio because it doesn’t really work in any of my rooms.
I still love that colour palette though, and the pattern is still in my Etsy and Ravelry stores – that won’t change. The inky blue lovers are still choosing to buy it too!
The New Colour Palette
For 2026, I decided to make a new version, still on the theme of blues but this time softer and more muted.
So here is where my Muted Blues blog post begins!
I began by selecting a big basket of colours, far too many as usual, but then I could whittle them down until I was happy with the collection.
As I already had the Moody Blues pattern and was happy with it, (no changes needed), it was simply a case of deciding which of my new shades would go where.

Like the original, the centre squares are in the palest shades and yes, I included some pale pink but also added mushroom, oatmeal and soft apricot shades. The blue in the picture above is a really pretty shade in the stylecraft special range – Periwinkle. It has become a firm favourite of mine.
Let’s have a look at some more pictures of the new blanket to see how the colours blend together –

I hope you can see from these pics that the colour palette contains soft denim blues mixed in with lavender, some duck egg and some sea green/blues.
Honestly, the colours gave me such joy as I put them together. I couldn’t put the blanket down, as I was eager to move from section to section to see how the colours unfolded.
Much of the joining of the squares was done with the utterly gorgeous Pebble Haze prints yarn in the shade Birling. You can see it in the pic above. The variegated blues and biscuity colours of the yarn worked beautifully to blend everything together.
I’m so pleased I decided to remake this blanket. As I said, it’s been a joy from start to finish.
It even caught the eye of my husband who usually doesn’t ‘see’ what I’m making. By that I mean he never bothers to look, lol. This time though he stopped one day as he was walking past me working on it – “I like that” he said. High praise indeed!!
I’ve already mentioned that I haven’t changed the pattern from the original Moody Blues blanket, but I am publishing the Muted Blues as a separate pattern. I pondered on this for a while, but decided the new colour scheme alone demanded to have its own pattern.

But that’s not to say I’m going to be mean and make you buy the new pattern if you already have the Moody Blues one.
And likewise, if you buy the new pattern but don’t have the old one, I won’t expect you to pay for the old one if you decide to try the ‘inky blue’ version as well.
I’m tying myself up in knots here!
I’ll try to make it clearer – one pattern and two colourways.
If you already have the Moody Blues pattern, you will be able to make the Muted Blues version, using the Yarn List below. You will need to go through your pattern and change the colours though, and you might well consider the new pattern as a worthwhile investment.
It is the same pattern but it’s been tidied up a little. I don’t mean there are mistakes in the old one, but the layout has been improved. Plus the new one comes in UK and US versions and you can choose which one to download. The old pattern is in UK terms only, but with a US conversion chart. (I will get round to making the US version one day).
I won’t be sending out free versions of the Muted Blues pattern to people who have the Moody Blues pattern. Why? Because it’s not a replacement for the first one which, as I said, is still selling well, and the Yarn List for the new one covers that anyway.
The Yarn Lists
(If you click on the images and lists, you will see an enlarged version).

Moody Blues Yarn List –

The screen shots of the Yarn Lists have been taken from the patterns.
Now here is how the colours compare, like for like. This shows which colour from the new pattern corresponds with which colour from the old pattern. This is the important one if you are using the old pattern with the new colours, for example.

SS =Stylecraft Special DK
YC = Yarnsmiths Create DK
PHP = Yarnsmiths Pebble Haze Prints DK
JCB = James C Brett Stonewash DK
Note how some colours appear in both lists but in different places. I’m not making it easy for you, am I? lol!
There are just a couple more points to note.
- As of Wednesday, June 17th 2026, Wool Warehouse will be stocking full YARN PACKS for the MUTED BLUES version, and also the pattern will be available to buy from them separately. You will be able to select either the UK or US version.
- To date, I haven’t given Wool Warehouse the Moody Blues pattern to sell, and they don’t have the option for Yarn Packs for it. This may happen further down the line.
- The Muted Blues (and of course the Moody Blues) patterns will be available separately from my ETSY and RAVELRY shops from June 17th. When you purchase from either of these shops, you will automatically have access to the UK and US versions (for the Muted Blues only) and you can choose which to download.
- I WILL get round to making a US version for the Moody Blues pattern, I promise!
- Lastly, this is for you if you are making the Muted Blues colour palette, but with the Moody Blues pattern. There is a part in the new pattern where I have opted to change a colour. In Section Eight Round 3, I’ve used the SS Lavender, when according to the original pattern it should be SS North Sea (the corresponding colour to Deep Denim). I thought it looked better to use the Lavender in the border, to balance out the quite large amount of Lavender which appears in an earlier section. Keep a note of this if you are using the original pattern with the new colours.

Well, I think I’ve said enough now. I hope you love the new colours as much as I do, plus I haven’t confused you too much with my ramblings!
Any problems or queries you can always email me from here or direct at woolthreadpaint@gmail.com.

What’s Next?
Traditionally the month of July sees me beginning to design and create my Christmas blanket for the new season. I think this is the seventh year in a row my summer has been all about Christmas!
There is an idea, plus a colour palette brewing in my little brain at the moment. I can’t say any more at the moment, but I’m looking forward to making a start.
Have a lovely summer, or winter depending where you are.
And as ever, Happy Crocheting!
